


SOUTHERN LAKES MULTISPORT CLUB
WINTER KAYAK SERIES
Join us for a series of four fantastic kayak races at different locations throughout the region. Catering to all abilities and classes of kayak, with a great social atmosphere, and the camaraderie of being hard-core in the depths of winter, paddlers return year after year to test their speed and improve their paddle fitness during winter. The Southern Lakes Multisport Club winter series is a fantastic opportunity to kick start your training for Kathmandu Coast to Coast and Red Bull Defiance, and are handicapped so everyone from beginners to those epic speedsters looking for a blistering personal best, have a chance to win.

Race 1 - Frankton
7 June 2020 (Allowable under Alert Level 2)
Location: Frankton Beach (Beach Access Road, off Lake Ave)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.
Entry Fee: $5 for SLMC Members $10 for non members
The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities. The course takes in a lap of Frankton Arm - around 10km. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear. Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Race 2 - Cromwell
21 June 2020 (Allowable under Alert Level 2)
Location: Butchers Drive Boat Ramp, Cromwell (off Melmore Tce)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.
Entry Fee: $5 for SLMC Members $10 for non members
The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities. The race travels up the Kawerau River towards the Bannockburn Bridge, taking in a lap of the Cairnmuir Inlet before the 'downhill leg towards home. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear. Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Race 3 - Wanaka
5 July 2020 (Allowable under Alert Level 2)
Location: Wanaka Boat Ramp, (Lakeside Road, Wanaka)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.
Entry Fee: $5 for SLMC Members $10 for non members
The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear. Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Race 4 - Clutha River
26 July 2020
Location: Miners Lane Recreation Area, Clyde
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.
Entry Fee: $5 for SLMC Members $10 for non members
The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A GRADE 2 KAYAK CERTIFICATE PLEASE CONTAC THE CLUB
The race is from Red Bridge in Clyde to the Historic Stone Bridge in Alexandra. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear. Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.
Car Shuttle/Logistics: There are usually several other paddlers who will be keen to car-pool to have a vehicle ready and waiting at the finish - make sure arrive early, before registration to tee-up with others for a ride/car relocation.

Race Finish:
Boat ramp area, Dunorling Street, Alexandra


Compulsory Gear
All kayaks are to have air bags fitted and inflated - or sealed hatches
Each competitor must have:

PFD which must have a foil blanket or bag attached or in a pocket, and a whistle attached

Seam sealed kayak jacket or rain jacket (can be worn or carried)
In a dry bag, secured in kayak:
-
Polypropylene (or merino) top and bottom
-
Spare hat (polypropylene or wool)
-
Gloves (wool or polypropylene)
