WINTER KAYAK SERIES

Sourthern Lakes Multisport Club Winter Kayak Series is back for 2021, and we're bringing you even more sweet paddling action: we have added a 5th race to the series!

Join us for five fantastic kayak races at different locations throughout the region.  Catering to all abilities and classes of kayak, with a great social atmosphere, and the camaraderie of being hard-core in the depths of winter, paddlers return year after year to test their speed and improve their paddle fitness during winter.  The Southern Lakes Multisport Club winter series is a fantastic opportunity to kick start your training for Kathmandu Coast to Coast, and are handicapped so everyone from beginners to those epic speedsters looking for a blistering personal best, have a chance to win.

Race 1 - Frankton

13 June 2021 

Location: Frankton Beach (Beach Access Road, off Lake Ave)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.

The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities.  The course takes in a lap of Frankton Arm - around 10km. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear.  Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Join us at The Boatshed Cafe & Bistro for a coffee, delicious warm things, and to share some yarns about your day on the water.

 
 
Race 2 - Cromwell

27 June 2021 

Location: Butchers Drive Boat Ramp, Cromwell (off Melmore Tce)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.

The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities.  The race travels up the Kawerau River towards the Bannockburn Bridge, taking in a lap of the Cairnmuir Inlet before the 'downhill leg' towards home. All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear.  Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Join us for a coffee,delicious warm things, and to share some yarns about your day on the water, at Forage Information Centre and Cafe, in Cromwell, after the race.

Race 3 - Wanaka

11 July 2021 

Location: Eely Point, (Lakeside Road, Wanaka)
Registration: 9am - 930am
Race Briefing: 9:45am
Start first wave: 10am.

The Wanaka race is fast and furious, a unique circuit course sees the different waves of paddlers, looping past each other multiple times.  The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities.  All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear.  Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Race 5 - Clutha River

8 August 2021

Location: Miners Lane Recreation Area, Clyde
Registration: 0830 - 0945
Race Briefing: 1000
Start first wave: 1030am.

The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A GRADE 2 KAYAK CERTIFICATE PLEASE CONTACT THE CLUB

 The race is from Red Bridge in Clyde to the Historic Stone Bridge in Alexandra.  All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear.  Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

Car Shuttle/Logistics: There are usually several other paddlers who will be keen to car-pool to have a vehicle ready and waiting at the finish - make sure arrive early, before registration to tee-up with others for a ride/car relocation.

Race 4 - Lake Hayes

25 July 2021

Location: Lake Hayes Recreation Area, North-End Lake Hayes (accessed from Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road)
Registration: 0830-0945am
Race Briefing: 1000am
Start first wave: 1030am.

The race is handicapped with the slowest competitors leaving in the first wave, and is open to all classes of kayak and to all kayaking abilities.  The race takes in two laps of Lake Hayes.  All paddlers must carry the required Compulsory Gear.  Prize giving will be held once the final paddler has completed the course.

SLMC Winter Kayak Series is attracting large fields of paddlers at each race.  Preparing the handicapping, and allocating waves for paddlers has become quite the mamoth task, so we would prefer that you enter online before race day.

ONLINE ENTRIES WILL CLOSE AT NOON THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE

Race numbers will be allocated to an entrant at their first event.  The number you are allocated will be yours for the season.

Terms & Conditions:

Cancellation:  If the race is cancelled due to weather, or circumstances outside of the organiser's control, notification will be posted on the SLMC Facebook Page by 7pm on the night prior and an email sent to those who entered.  There will be no refunds given.

 

Withdrawals - Anyone who has entered the 5 race series and wishes to withdraw from their series entry must notify the race organisers by emailing slmcmembership@gmail.com.  Persons withdrawing by 9 June will be refunded 80% of their entry fee.  There will be not refunds for withdrawals recieved after 9 June, or for any other reason.

 

Force Majeure - In the event of an emergency or natural disaster, earthquake etc - and the series is cancelled, there will be no refunds, but the organisers will make every effort to rechedule the races where practical 

 

Compulsory Gear

All kayaks are to have air bags fitted and inflated - or sealed hatches

Each competitor must have:

  • PFD which must have a foil blanket or bag attached or in a pocket, and a whistle attached

  • Seam sealed kayak jacket or rain jacket (can be worn or carried)

In a dry bag, secured in kayak:​

  • Polypropylene (or merino) top and bottom

  • Spare hat (polypropylene or wool)

  • Gloves (wool or polypropylene)

In the event that NZ ends up back in Alert Level 2 for any of the dates of the 2021 Winter Kayak Series, SLMC will be adhering to the NZ Governments Guidlines, and ask that all of our awesome Winter Kayak Series Paddlers please undertand and follow our Level 2 precautions.

  • Race entry numbers capped, priority will be given to series entry holders

  • We ask that supporters stay at home, if you absolutely need someone with you, please ensure they understand physical distancing

  • Use your own equipment

  • Maintain safe physical distancing where possible

  • Face coverings encouraged for briefing and prize giving

  • Sign in and use hand sanitiser

If the region is in Level 3 or 4 at the time of the race/races, it will be postponed with the intention of holding it as soon as practically possible once the Level has returned to Level 1 or Level 2
